Eight years covering the games industry and I’m still surprised by how much of it goes unreported. I started at a tech outlet that treated games as a vertical, spent a few years covering whatever landed on my desk, and at some point games stopped being a beat and became the whole thing. I grew up around games but never seriously considered writing about them until I realised I was more interested in the conversations happening around a release than the release itself. I studied journalism. What holds my attention is the industry surrounding games more than any individual title: where platforms are heading, what the arguments about engines and storefronts actually mean in practice, how the culture has shifted in ways a review can’t quite hold. I share a flat with someone who works in finance and we have almost no overlap in what we consider a normal thing to care about. That’s fine. I find the business of this industry genuinely fascinating in a way I’ve stopped trying to explain at parties.
