Most players never finish Pokémon Unbound. Not because it’s too hard, but because they’re missing key information that changes everything.
Moves get wasted. Battles get lost. Hidden items sit uncollected for the whole playthrough.
I’ve put together this Pokémon Unbound guide to fix all of that. You’ll get the tips, tricks, and secrets that most players never find out. The ones that actually move the needle.
Keep reading. You’ll thank yourself later.
Pokémon Unbound Overview & Getting Started
Pokémon Unbound is a fan-made game built on Pokémon FireRed. It was created by Skeli789 and the Skeli team. The game is set in the Borrius region, a place with its own history, characters, and story.
And it’s not a simple retelling. There’s a full plot, side quests, and a difficulty system you can adjust.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a casual player or someone who wants a real challenge; the game has something for you.
Getting started is straightforward. You pick your difficulty, choose your starter, and get dropped into a world that rewards exploration.
One thing I’ll say right away. Before you follow any Pokémon Unbound walkthrough, pay attention to the story from the start.
It lays the groundwork for everything that comes later. Miss the early details, and later parts of the game won’t make as much sense.
Difficulty Modes Explained & Insane Mode
Pokémon Unbound gives you full control over how hard you want the game to be. It’s one of the few fan games that actually think about every type of player.
- Easy Mode: Great for players who just want to enjoy the story without too much pressure. Wild Pokémon and trainers are easier to beat.
- Normal Mode: A balanced experience. Good for players who know Pokémon but want a fair challenge.
- Hard Mode: Trainers get smarter here. They use held items, better movesets, and actual strategy.
- Insane Mode: This is where the game gets serious. Every trainer is optimized. One wrong move and you lose.
Not sure which mode suits you? Check the Pokémon Unbound wiki for a detailed breakdown of each difficulty before you commit to one.
In Insane Mode, always keep your team evenly leveled. Use type advantages in every single battle. Never skip held items. They make a bigger difference than most players think.
Pokémon Unbound Guide – Complete Walkthrough

This Pokémon Unbound guide walks you through every part of the game, from your first steps in West Borrius to the final showdown at the Pokémon League. Follow each section in order, and you won’t miss a thing.
West Borrius (Parts 1–10)
West Borrius is where everything begins.
The path runs from Frozen Heights through Bellin Town, Icicle Cave, and Dresco Town’s Gym, then continues through Grim Woods, Cinder Volcano, Crater Town’s Gym, Valley Cave, Frost Mountain, and finally Blizzard City’s Gym.
- Stock up on Potions at Bellin Town before entering Icicle Cave
- The Dresco Gym uses Ice-types. Bring a Fire or Fighting-type
- Cinder Volcano has hidden items off the main path. Check every corner
- Blizzard City’s Gym is tougher than it looks. Level up before entering
- Talk to every NPC. Several give free items or trigger side missions early
Central Borrius (Parts 11–20)
Central Borrius picks up the pace. You’ll move through Fallshore City, Epidimy, and Tehl Towns, then tackle the Fallshore Gym.
From there, it’s Thundercap Mountain, Tarmigan Town, Dehara City’s Gym, the Ruins of Void, and finally the Shadow Base.
| Location | Key Item | Important NPC |
|---|---|---|
| Fallshore City | Surf HM | Gym Leader Mara |
| Thundercap Mountain | Thunder Stone | Hidden Researcher |
| Dehara City | Exp. Share | Professor’s Assistant |
| Ruins of Void | Void Key | Shadow Grunt Leader |
| Shadow Base | Rare Candy | Mission Trigger NPC |
The Ruins of Void is a turning point in the story. Don’t rush through it.
East Borrius & Late Game (Parts 21–39)
This is the final stretch. You’ll cover Routes 13 and 14, the Auburn Waterway, the Great Desert, Vivill Town, Antisis City’s Gym, Seaport City, Polder Town’s Gym, Magnolia Town, Redwood Gym, Victory Road, and the Pokémon League.
The Great Desert is easy to get lost in. Stick to the outer edges first, then work your way in. Antisis City has one of the toughest gyms in the game.
Stock up on Full Restores before you go in. Victory Road is long, so carry plenty of Revives and Max Potions heading into the League.
Distortion World Navigation
The Distortion World trips up many players. The layout shifts as you move through it, and there are no clear markers.
- Always move in a consistent direction. Random movement gets you stuck
- Interact with every floating platform you see
- There is a specific NPC near the centre who gives a directional hint
- The exit is locked until you complete the required encounter
- Save before entering. It’s easy to get caught without enough healing items
Redwood Gym Rock-Button Puzzle
The Redwood Gym puzzle confuses most players on their first try. It involves pushing rocks onto buttons in the right order to open the path to the Gym Leader.
Start from the left side of the room. Push the first rock straight down onto the bottom button. Move to the next rock to the right and push it left. The middle button opens the gate to the leader.
If you get it wrong, leave and re-enter to reset the room.
Other Notable Puzzles
A few other puzzles in this Pokémon Unbound guide are worth calling out specifically.
| Puzzle | Location | Quick Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Lava Platform Puzzle | Cinder Volcano Depths | Move quickly. Platforms sink fast |
| Sewer Switch Puzzle | Antisis Sewers | Hit switches left to right in order |
| Ice Tile Puzzle | Icicle Cave | Plan your full path before moving |
| Shadow Lock Puzzle | Shadow Base | Use the map item found nearby |
Take your time with each one. Rushing almost always means starting over.
Gym Leaders, Rivals & Elite Four Strategies
![]()
Every major battle in Pokémon Unbound requires a real plan. Knowing what each opponent uses before you walk in makes a huge difference.
Gym Leaders
Each Gym Leader in Borrius uses a specific type with well-built teams. Always check the type matchups before entering. Bring at least two counters, not just one.
Rivals
Your rival’s team grows alongside yours. They hit hard, and they adapt. Don’t underestimate them in the mid-game battles. Their movesets get surprisingly good.
Elite Four
The Elite Four hits harder than most players expect. Each member uses a mix of held items and strong moves.
- Keep your full team above level 70
- Carry at least 20 Full Restores
- Set up entry hazards where you can
